A big thank you! and bon voyage! to our buddy Skander.

March 29th, 2011

I’ve been wanting to write about Skander for quite a while. Skander is a rare bird, not because of his goofy eccentricities (he has them), but because of his constant self-evaluation, crazy *work ethic* and enormous heart. Skander has generously donated numerous weekends and hours of his time putting in some serious manual labor. He’s a wicked smart engineer (he helped us with the heat loss calcs too), but no job is beneath him – he’s a walking lesson of humility. We wish him the best on his travels (and hope he’ll come back to portland)!

Whenever I get a chance, I like to run close-in errands with our homemade bakfiet. Today I picked up a load of hat channel from the local supplier — I love people’s reactions, which are always positive and often quizzical.

Spray Foam

March 4th, 2011

We added spray foam to the interior wall that abuts the cistern and to the ceiling / rake wall intersection. Spray foam performs great, but it smells really bad… Insulation is still an area that needs improvement from a sustainability standpoint; on one hand there’s the issue of performance (r-value and air sealing) and on the other the issue of petro-chemicals and toxicity…
